Matter is the stuff you use to build Objects and Rooms.
At the beginning of the game you start off with 2000 matter, however this will quickly be used up and you'll need to go Mining to collect minerals from Asteroids.
You can then refine minerals in a Matter Refinery to make more matter.
Matter can also be obtained by salvaging the Base Seed Pod, parts of your station or a Derelict.
